#travelwithgdp Fact: The Falaj Daris is the biggest falaj in Oman, and one of the five collectively listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2006. Nizwa’s former prosperity was due to its plethora of water supplies, with over 134 aflaj (plural for falaj) in the Nizwa wilayat (village). One hundred of these are still in use today.
Description: Not one of my better pictures but the significance is massive nonetheless. The Falaj Irrigation Systems of Oman are ancient water channels from 500 AD. They represent a type of irrigation system as old as 5000 years in the region. Using gravity, water is channeled from underground sources or springs to support agriculture and domestic use. Currently, you can find the locals as well as tourists taking a cool dip in the mornings, nights, especially on the weekends to cool off from the heat. I did place my legs as they are said to have healing powers as well, and lukewarm spring waters turned out to be pretty awesome.
