#travelwithgdp Fact: The Palk Strait is the narrow stretch of sea that separates India and Sri Lanka in the Palk Bay region of the Indian ocean. The strait is just 53 to 80 km wide that, fishermen on both sides of the waters often find themselves to have landed in the neighbor’s territory and get themselves arrested. It is said that 85 Indian fishermen have been killed and 180 others injured in 168 incidents of firing by Lankan Naval personnel from 1991 to 2013.
Description: The major occupation in Rameswaram is fishing. If you check out the news, regularly Indian fishermen are caught and imprisoned due to the crossing of international borders which regularly leads to strikes by the fishermen community of the town. Seeking to find a permanent solution to the vexatious fishermen issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the ‘deep-sea fishing project’ by distributing sanction orders to fishermen to construct tuna longliner trawlers under the ‘Blue Revolution’ scheme. As the fishermen ‘trespass’ into the Sri Lankan waters while fishing in the Palk Bay and get arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, the Centre and State governments have chalked out a scheme to make 2,000 trawlers to switch over to deep-sea tuna longliner-cum-gill-netter boats over a period of three years.
